Planting the pumpkin plants. Several rows can be planted at once, and up to three workers are on the machine at any one time. |
| Plants must be loaded onto the planter for one row of the field at a time, and since the fields are often quite large, trays find themselves stacked wherever possible. |

Plants are kept in polythene tunnels until they are ready for planting out in the field. The heat speeds up germination, but the plants must be watered regularly. |
| Depending on the variety of pumpkin plant, large spaces must be left between rows to allow the plants to spread out. In a matter of weeks, these spaces will have been filled in. |
